Thank ye kindly! XD
1. things that inspire you
Most of my ‘inspired’ moments come at any period of relative mental boredom. If I don’t have anything needing brain power to do, my mind will wander and ‘write’. Ideas come from all over and grow, from song lyrics to textbooks, but also just life in general. Heck, even some of my stories from work are to die for.
2. things that motivate you
The stories themselves do a good share, because once the idea bites hard, it’s hard to focus on anything else until it’s at least outlined. They feel alive, and noisy. For the Path Timeline, the Marriageverse is motivation for everything that comes before because otherwise this fun times collection just looks like a crack pair AU. Also, deadlines help, as does my current need to make a better year of it than last year.
5. since how long do you write?
Fanfic? Since 2001. A couple minor student pieces up before that but nothing very lengthy. I did win money and a trip once, but not for fiction.
6. how did writing change you?
I think I’ve become more observant of people’s reactions, including my own. Always cataloging, to some extent. Publishing fic online too has been very good, because I was once painfully shy and always putting my foot in my mouth from overthinking what to say. But as I got used to interacting more with writers and readers online, with the buffer of communication not being instant, it spilled over and one day I realized I’d been having normal face-to-face conversations without any anxiety for quite some time. Made a lot of missteps on the way, but I got there.
As for the writing itself, it enhanced my skillset in some very good ways. STEM types are stereotyped, not without reason, as having rather below average language skills. I think it’s mostly a matter of hyperspecialization leaving little time for the humanities, not so much innate inability, but there is a generalized insecurity regarding words among us, IME. Writing consistently, even at my pace, gave me some reasonable confidence in my ability to string a sentence together, helped me tackle the language sections of various standardized tests, helped me land a spot in the JET programme, and in more than one place made me a go-to person for business letter writing, proofreading, rephrasing and crossword puzzle answers. I don’t think my skills are spectacular but in a word-shy science environment they can stand out.
