Today my seven year old cousin said, in reference to the subject of pirates:

“It’s one of my distant likes. I still really like it when it comes up.”

And I just had to record it somewhere because I think it’s such a wise and simple way of expressing an important concept. Sometimes I feel like I’m neglecting an interest if I don’t do anything about it for a long period of time, like I can’t really say I like it if I don’t keep it up, but no, it’s just… it’s a distant like. That’s its own thing now.

She gets philosophical when in fancy dress, apparently.

i like this term. your small relation is very wise.

Does anyone else have that one fanfiction that they’re dying to to write but it’s like, mega long and basically a whole universe, and then you’ve got head-cannons to go with that fanfiction and like fanfiction to go with that fanfiction an back-stories for every character and you get frikin’ feels about that universe and it’d be the most coolest thing if you could just be bothered to frikin’ write it.

If you see this on your dash, it’s too late

The main thing that really irks me about anti discourse is the fact they demonise things that are completely normal and make people feel bad for enjoying things or taking part in things which are completely normal.

Shipping random crack ships for your own enjoyment is normal.

Writing self indulgent fanfic just for the sake of it is normal.

Exploring weird tangents in fanon is normal.

It’s just making people feel like they’re doing something wrong when in reality they’re doing things that are completely normal and which have been around for decades in fandom environments. Just for some reason in the past 5-10 years people have developed a very warped perception of what fandom is supposed to be and have started making massive deals about things which are, in the scheme of things, pretty average for fandom and really dont need people kicking a fuss up about them. Stop making people feel like they’re doing something wrong when they’re doing the same thing people have been doing in fandoms for decades. All it does is push people out of environments they enjoy being in due to this fear they’re doing something wrong when in reality they’re not.

Shipping heroes and villains is normal.

Shipping characters purely because you like their aesthetics/think they’d make an attractive couple is normal.

Angst, whump, and darkfics are normal.

Disliking common fandom headcanons is normal.

Exploring your fetishes through fictional characters is normal.

Shipping yourself/your ocs with canon characters is normal.

Being attracted to fictional characters is normal.

Aging up characters is normal.

Ignoring ages entirely and just doing whatever you want to fictional characters is normal.

Being attracted to fictional teenagers is normal.

Shipping things just because they’re taboo/would cause drama for the characters is normal.

Having multiple and/or conflicting otps is normal.

None of these things are a sudden new scourge that is ruining fandom. They are all normal ways for fans to enjoy themselves and have been going on since the Star Trek zine days.
