People keep asking “How can anyone have a problem with AO3 doing fundraising!”

And I’m just like…. Have people not noticed all the virulent anti-AO3 hate on tumblr propagated by the anti shipping community? Antis have a problem with AO3 raising money because they hate the fact that AO3 won’t allow them to censor content they don’t like and doesn’t tolerate bullying. That’s who is putting out these posts like, “how can this nasty site raise so much money?” Read between the lines.

And for all the people who are just like, “If they don’t want AO3 to to raise money why don’t they just not donate?”

Because antis are incapable of saying “this isn’t for me so I won’t support it but I don’t care if other people support it. They have to actively discourage other people from supporting the thing. At the same time, they also won’t stop using AO3 because 1) they’re a bunch of fucking hypocrites who want readership and that’s where the readers are and 2) they’re too lazy to put together their own archive using AO3′s open source code because that would require doing coding and buying servers and doing all the moderating they want, which is hard, and they just want to engage in empty virtue signalling, which is easy

Anyway, my point is, people need to be aware that these people are out there and they hate AO3 and they want it to go away even though they’re actively using the platform. They’ve even said they want AO3 to fail so something “better” (re, something they control) can take its place. Some of them are blatant about it, calling AO3 a cesspit of pedophilia, and some of them are subtle about it, saying more innocuous things like ‘Does AO3 really need 130K a year?” “Shouldn’t you give your money to individual needy people doing gofundmes for stuff that’s more more important?”

But all of these people have the same end goal, which is the destruction of the archive, and the way they’re going about it right now is to try to discourage people from donating.

So instead of asking, “Why do people object to AO3 raising money?” start telling people “Hey there are people out there who hate AO3 and want to destroy it and we have to protect the archive from them.” And donate, if you can, and signal boost, if you can’t.

HAPPY 20 YEARS TO FF.NET!

It was launched twenty years ago today, and single-handedly changed the fandom game. It opened Fanfic hosting to anyone with an email address, including fangirls like myself that couldn’t afford servers or connected to fandom to get hosted anywhere.

It’s fallen in decline in recent years, but I feel like it deserves a shout-out for being the predecessor for all that’s come after it, AO3 included 👍👌

Agreed. It’s been the gateway to fandom for so many people. I never would’ve ended up in fandom if not for ff.net, and I’d never have kept writing if not for the lovely people who commented faithfully on all my fics there for years.

Maybe if you can’t update fanfics, you shouldn’t write them. Stick to oneshots.

Maybe you should come off Anon, and shouldn’t tell me what to do.

Omg wtf? Screw them, @prompto-cam You go at your own pace. We write out of love in our spare time, around everything else life throws at us. A true fan will always be happy to wait for an update. ♡

Very rude anon!!!!

“professional authors” take years before they release another book.

I write at a pace about a chapter a month on my long fic right now because that is the pace that I can manage without stressing out.

There are days where I can’t write.

There are days I am to ill to write.

Real life gets in the way.

This is not my job.

This is my hobby.

I appreciate all the feedback I get.

I wish I could write faster (Like I used to be able to do).

I wish I would make less mistakes when I write.

NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TELL ME NOT TO WRITE FOR ANY REASON.

SO!

Fuck this person. Like, seriously. Fuck them. You post when you’re ready. You post what makes you happy.

Anon, if you want to make demands on people’s time, open up your wallet and pay for it. We’re here for bigger purposes than providing entitled assholes like you with free entertainment.

Who wants to bet that Anon doesn’t write at all?

For sure they’ve never put a ficcing word down in their lives. There are so many of them out there who don’t think of us as actual people but as product dispensers.

Maybe if you can’t update fanfics, you shouldn’t write them. Stick to oneshots.

an increasingly irksome scenario

an underage person on tumblr, emphatically: IT’S BAD AND WRONG FOR ADULTS TO WRITE SEXUAL CONTENT ABOUT TEENAGERS OR STORIES WHERE DARK THINGS HAPPEN IN ROMANTIC/SEXUAL CONTEXTS OR FICS WHERE THE CHARACTERS ARE ENEMIES IN CANON BECAUSE THINK OF THE CHILDREN, IF YOU DO YOU’RE A PAEDOPHILE WHO CONDONES ABUSE
me, in an imploring whisper: you are literally underage. if all adults were fully committed to the same reductive, simplistic morality you’re using to demonise narrative concepts outside your current emotional framework, you would be banned from this conversation entirely, because you are underage. the idea that only those aged between 14-17 can write romantic or sexual content about characters in that age bracket (because it would be Wrong and paedophilic for anyone older to do so) means you’re effectively arguing that teens aren’t old enough to have any true sexual agency. as you’ve likewise decided that writing about a sexual act is morally equivalent to committing that act, by your own logic, you aren’t old enough or adult enough or sexually mature enough to be writing about sexual anything in the first place – in which case, nobody should be allowed to write such stories. I absolutely want you to be able to set boundaries around your sexual experiences and to engage safely with your developing sexual identity on your own terms while still remaining informed, but you also need to acknowledge that sexual development is part of becoming an adult, not an exciting new facet of childhood; and as such, venturing publicly into this arena via fandom, ficwriting or other narrative/public avenues means you are going to encounter adults. if you are not ready to take this step, that’s fine! go always at your own pace! but please, for the sake of everyone, learn to tell the difference between your immediate personal comfort levels with particular adult concepts and actual moral or criminal transgressions made by adults. your discomfort with a particular concept is valid without the concept itself being Wrong.
