Just a quick reminder that fanfic authors are normal humans from all stripes of life. They’re not teachers or experts or moral guides, and they shouldn’t be expected to be one. They’re writing this fic for many reasons, but to educate us probably isn’t one of those reasons. Some will even say that they know the scene is inaccurate, but it’s more fun this way.

(And really, if professional movies/books/TV shows can get so many things wrong- like first aid, the one phone call in jail thing, and countless historical events- I think we can give fans doing this as a hobby some slack.)

So please don’t take things you learn in fanfic and apply them to real life without verification. By the same measure, don’t expect hobbyists to research everything they write.

Voting should not be a privilege that can be revoked as a punishment for a crime. Voting should be a civic obligation, a compulsory and expected duty of all citizens within a democracy. It’s not a treat reserved for the best, smartest, or most law-abiding of us, but a responsibility of all of us- like paying taxes. 

That means that, yes, felons should have the right to vote. It means that yes, voting should me mandatory. 

Anyone who argues that it is a GOOD thing that certain groups of people don’t vote or are under-represented in voting for any reason does not properly value the function that voting serves in a healthy democracy.

This month I’ve been really feeling it with all the horror mangas, so I thought I’d share what I’ve read for this year’s Halloween mood!

Most of them are one-shots or a collection of one-shots. I’ll update it when I’ve read more.

Everybody talks about the clueless white women in horror movies but it’s the children that annoy me the most. Kid, this is not the time be asking, “Why,” and wanting explanations for everything under the sun, intellectual curiosity under these conditions is highly inadvised. Just stfu and do what you’re told for once in your life or you’re going to get people killed, ffs, read the room

Lordhammercy I don’t get why English insults are so limited, always some kind of sex act and a body part, maybe a relative thrown in for good measure, when we’ve got a whole historical world’s worth of stolen grammar, and a whole modern world’s worth of zoology. We could be mixing it up like cocktails, ya foxy giraffe spots! It would be entertaining!

People helping people. That’s all this world should be about cuz all we got is each other. Love seeing this kindness from big companies. Needs to happen more often in corporate America.

The great thing is, it’s just magnets.  One very simple step toward giving folks more independence.  I mean, just look at the smile, it matters.

The person who suggested ‘reader tags’ needs to get their head out of their ass and live in the real world. They should be thankful works on AO3 are tagged as much as they are. I work in a bookshop, and because we don’t believe in censorship, we sell a lot of problematic stuff, including ‘The Turner Diaries’. We never put warnings on books, because i) who gets to define what’s offensive and ii) it’s not our job. Readers should educate themselves and figure out how to cope with troubling content.

And also stop expecting their fandom experience to be a pastel-colored glittery rainbow land full of only sunshine and smiles. There will be ugly things here. Everybody stumbles upon some of it now and then. Use the back button, make a polite tag request of the author, and move the fuck on. I get coming to fandom to escape the world, but we all have to do our own legwork to reach our happy place.
