Something that I need young voters, especially ones like my fellow peeps in Texas who got crushed and disappointed, to understand is that when you’re talking about politics, you’re playing the long game. If you look at you at US politics over the last couple hundred years, there is a consistent back-and-forth between conservative and liberal power on the whole.
What I’m saying is, this is not your excuse to give up voting next time. We made a Republican incumbent in fucking Texas sweat. The race was less than 2% difference by the end. Go out again next time. Do not stay home because you feel like it’s going to be like this forever.
The reason that Republicans have consistently high turnout is because they are old. They understand that making what you want to see happen takes consistent effort over a long period of time. It is not a game of instant gratification or go home. They’ve seen many elections cycles and they’ve seen it go both ways. They understand they can get what they want if they show up and stay dedicated. Liberals, being a very young group in general, are new at this and, as I’ve noticed, their spirits are easily crushed.
You cannot let them have that win. Because that’s exactly what they’re fucking aiming for.
2020, let’s do this again.

Anyone else tired of the 3 guy 1 girl character setup in literally every movie ever?
It’s because at roughly that ratio is where men feel that men and women are represented equally.
There was a study done and when there was 1:1 male/female the male audiences felt as though there were more too many women. In general the men studied perceived things like 3 guys to 1 girl as more representative of the world.
That disgusts me.
There have also been studies in which it was found that men think women talk much more than they actually do – if they have to share equal air time with a woman they think they’re not getting a word in edgewise.
Imagine being so used to privilege and prioritization to think that the equal treatment of others is an unfairness to you.
Probably in part because they’re so wrapped up with their bros first life/women avoid them, they think our comparative scarcity is normal.

We need a name for the shock-trauma that comes from reading a long fic, chapter after chapter, barely pausing to eat let alone pay attention to what chapter you’re on, and then scrolling down to click a button that isn’t there. There needs to be a word for the way all of the emotions you’ve been carrying that were hurtling forward with you as you read non stop, suddenly crash into a wall around you. There needs to be a word for the way you’re abruptly unbalanced and lost. There needs to be a word for how you futilely attempt to refresh the page, even though you know the next chapter won’t appear.
I read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn growing up. They were in my school library. All my schools. I got my own copies for Christmas.
He did not read Little Women growing up. Not early on like with Tom and Huck, and any number of similar Classics That Are Good For Kids. Little Women was not in his school library. It was never in his stocking.
It did go under the tree for his sister, and rather later in the game, voracious reader and bored kid that he was, he borrowed it and unintentionally corrected society’s damned oversight. Not every boy does that.
Give boys books about girls. Let them learn early on what it is to be in this skin. Let them see that we have thoughts and dreams and hopes and feelings just the same as they do. Give them that reminder while they still know it, cement it before ‘manhood’ teaches them to forget.
And maybe later we’ll have fewer douchelords acting like girls are just accessories in their lives, achievements to be unlocked, or a damn alien species. Get them started on the road of understanding that people not like them are still people.
Because we fucking had to, it was considered a good education.
