I hate it when Fandom Very Old tries to push Fandom Regular Old, Fandom Middle Aged and Fandom Young around. Most older fans I know aren’t like that but that post has brought some out of the woodwork of a variety I can’t stand.
The first gave me serious creeper vibes. I felt like he was looking to boss around some college girls for the thrill. Forty-something year old male, spent 90% of a long reply talking about how old he is in fandom, how slow his first modem was, how much he had seen, peppered liberally with condescension (”Have you kids even seen a mimeograph?” and “Marion Zimmer Bradley. Look it up.”). The next ten percent was essentially telling me/us to stfu and accept the situation as it was. I consider my initial impression confirmed when I told him my age range and he never spoke again.
And then we get the Mary Sunshines, who want us to sing kumbayah all day, and bake a cake made of rainbows so we could all eat it and be happy, who advocate nothing but sweetness and kindness and education, as if there couldn’t possibly have been any of that before they came down from on high to hand us the obvious solution. As if being harassed, dogpiled, doxxed and slandered, or even just the risk of it, is something as adults we ought to just brush off. I see a very big difference between “Stop harassing people over fanwork” and “Handle everything my way and just ignore it.” Shut up and put up and stop standing up for yourself. Why do they expect us to ignore harassment and not the harassers to ignore fics? As if that ever meant anything besides more emotional labor on our part. As if naughty children will somehow realize all on their own that their
behavior is wrong, without someone telling them, and showing
them some consequences, even as simple as being excluded and blocked.
I recognize that it is a sort of privilege to have grown up for the most part just being a girl. Not an Indian girl, or a South Asian girl, or a POC, or even a brown girl except when we played the schoolyard game of the same name. That being surrounded by more of the same or very close to it, I was able to think of myself within a society, for a nice long-enough formative time, as just another person in the world. Not an Other. And when I did return to being The Other, I didn’t much care for it. As such, I don’t bother clearly defining my ethnicity for the benefit of others. I much prefer it when that one thing is not that big a deal instead of a TSA red flag and ‘Agent Bob, keep an eye on that one’. And my race has nothing to do with why I originally came here in the first place.
But damn, oh damn, is it ever annoying that so many people here, ‘activists’ all, will rush to assume I must be white because I have not bothered to say otherwise. Who’ll call me ‘Karen’ and ‘Susan’ because if I say something they don’t like I must be the most banal sort of suburban WASP. That I’m not even worth having an actual discussion with because they’re sure my point of view is irrelevant and uninformed. Because I’m here for cute dogs and pictures of Sephiroth’s ass, not declaring my skin every second and performing my ethnicity in an easily understandable i.e. stereotypical way for the benefit of strangers passing by. And I’m not about to start doing something I’m uncomfortable with to counteract that prejudice. That’s their problem to work on.
I hope one day the rest of you get to experience just being people too.
How about adults in fandom spaces start teaching kids in fandom spaces that “ship and let ship” is disgusting and normalizing pedophilia, abuse, and incest, instead of just letting them go around chanting it.
How about antis stop making it easier for legitimate predators to fly under the radar and predate on children by taking the word “pedophilia” and using it to mean “something that upsets me.”
Also, how about antis start realizing that portrayal is not normalization and finally learn to distinguish fiction and reality.

You expect children to know they shouldn’t try to fly like Superman by the time they’re five or six. The sex stuff is no different. If you’re that concerned, learn to be a sexual health educator, join a big brother/sister program, or tell the kids to Go Ask Alice or visit Scarleteen, so they learn about how sex works in the real world instead of trying to pick it all up off the streets.
